The Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games were an international multi-sport event held from 23 July to 8 August 2021 and from 24 August to 5 September 2021, respectively, in Tokyo, Japan. They were originally scheduled to take place during the summer of 2020, but the event was postponed to 2021 due to the global COVID-19 pandemic. They were largely held behind closed doors with no public spectators permitted due to the declaration of a state of emergency in the Greater Tokyo Area.

With all the challenges that these Games presented, I Design Access, the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) and with the Local Organizing Committee (LOC) worked together to bring the accessibility of all infrastructure, permanent and temporary, to the top standards.

I Design Access, LLC, together with the IPC, oversaw all aspects of accessibility during the design development, construction document and delivery of the project.

The Tokyo 2020 Olympic & Paralympic Games presented challenges from the limited space available, the already existent infrastructure, and the cost of the delay of the Games impacting the budget. I Design Access worked with the LOC all along to make sure that all requirements were met, and that creative solutions were applied were necessary.

The Olympic Games featured 339 events in 33 different sports, encompassing a total of 50 disciplines. The 2020 Summer Paralympics featured 539 events in 22 sports. I Design Access objective was to review the design of all the venues, oversee the implementation of any modifications and inspect the final builds.  More than 4,400 athletes competed in the Paralympic Games and about 11,420 athletes participated in the Olympic competitions.  I Design Access also reviewed and provided recommendations to improve the airport and the city’s infrastructure to ensure a positive participants of the games experience.

Currently, I Design Access also works with international sports organizations for major international sports events in America, Western Europe and Asia.
